STEPS TO START A BLOG TODAY
Here are some of my 3 easy steps to start a self-hosted WordPress blog, no technical knowledge required.
Step 1: Set up your blog
You need two things to start: A blogging platform + Hosting. I will show you how to get both at once.
A blogging platform is a software which puts your words into blog form. Hosting makes your blog live online on the internet. This combination I’m personally using it You’ll get a discount if you use the links below. Disclosure: These links are my affiliate links, meaning, I will earn a small part of commission if you make a purchase through these links.
To begin, Click Here to go to Bluehost. Then hit the green “Get Started” button.
Select any plan by clicking on the green “Select” button. I recommend choosing the Choice Plus plan because it has more unlimited features and includes domain privacy also. Domain name privacy is to keep your personal information hidden from the public. If you want you can also choose the Basic or Plus plan.
After choosing the plan you need to get a Domain Name.
Enter the domain name you want. This will be your web address. For example; xavierdigital.com is my domain name.
Don’t have a domain name? Enter here in the “New Domain” box. Want to use a domain you already own? Enter here in the “I have a domain name” box. Doing this you won’t mess it up if it’s currently being used elsewhere. This is just how Bluehost identifies your account.
After choosing the Domain Name now you have to create your account in Bluehost. You can use Google or enter your information manually. Any which way is fine. Just make sure to use a working/active email address because you will also get your login information on the email.
Select your account package. Choose an account plan for your domain. Bluehost provides a plan for 12 months, 24 months and 36 months They don’t offer any monthly payment plan. As you can see, it is a very reasonable monthly amount. It’s not bad for your own blog or website, right? It’s a great deal.
Tip: Low pricing they are only offering to new customers for the first time signup and payment. To make it simple, if you choose the 12 months plan, your pricing will low only for a year and then after it may increase, but if you choose the highest 36 months plan, then your pricing will be good for those 36 months. So, I would recommend you choose the longest plan as per your budget if allows.
Skip the part which says “package extras”. Just make sure you uncheck all the boxes.
Now Enter your billing information. Check the I Confirm Box and agree to the fine print and click the green button “Submit”.
Step 2: Get started with WordPress
In this step, we’ll get to know WordPress and configure some important settings in it.
Welcome to the WordPress Dashboard. Once you’ve opened WordPress, you’ll see your Dashboard. The black column on the left is a good indicator you’re in WordPress Page. It will look something like this below:
This is how the centre for your WordPress site. You will be spending a lot of time here to create a blog and many more! From here, you will publish your blog posts and manage all other things of your WordPress site.
Just skip the blue buttons in the middle of your screen which says (Business & Personal) and clicks “I don’t need help” instead. Why? Because you will learn to manage everything on your own.
Configure Setting Correctly
Very Important to Configure your settings. Before publishing anything on your blog, I would highly recommend making some tweaks to your WordPress settings. Doing this will set you up to your WordPress website easy to use.
Tip: As you move forward to your Dashboard, you will be seeing offers for add-ons at the very top. I suggest skipping those by closing the boxes. They can be added later.
First of all, change your username from admin. The very first setting is you have to configure is your username. Right now your username is “admin” hackers will easily get the admin accounts to break into your WordPress sites, so this setting is very important to do it for you to be safe and secured from hackers.
Just Think for a sec like this: If a hacker wants to hack your website, they will need your username and password, right? But here the hackers have easy access to know that “admin” is a default username, and many people don’t change it they are already halfway into their goal.
So it’s very important to change it, go to Users > All Users.
Alright, now here is how you can remove the admin username and use yours...
Now add a new user by clicking on the “Add New” button under “All Users”, on the left side OR you can also click the button at the top of the page which says “Add New” both does the same thing.
Next Step, fill the new user information shows in the box which is marked for you:
Type all the correct information
- Enter a new username of your choice.
- Enter your active email address. If you’re prompted to use a different email than the one you already used, use a second email address instead. Don’t worry; later you’ll be able to modify it back when the admin user is deleted after a couple of minutes.
- Select a password. Use a new password for the new username by clicking the “Show password” button and enter a strong password of your choice.
- Make sure to select the “Administrator” role. Choose it from the dropdown menu where it says to “Role”, this is very important because it gives you the admin-level privileges in your WordPress account.
- Next click the “Add New User” Button.
Need to log out from the old username
Now, just log out from the WordPress account you are logged in. To do that Look at the right side top of your screen or see the image below to follow the step and then just click on logout to log out.
Next, you will be directly taken to the WordPress login screen which looks like this:
Step 3: Now login to your WordPress
Now, just log in using the new username, Which you just created and the password you just created.
Next, Go to Users > All Users and above the admin username in the list just like you created above. This time, a “Delete” link will be appearing as an option on admin click “Delete”.
You will be asked 2 option “Delete all content” OR “Attribute all content to:” (Your username you just created), click on the second option “Attribute all content to” and then click on the blue button which says “Confirm Deletion”.
Now From here, once you log in to WordPress you will have to use, your new admin username and password when you log in to your WordPress.
Congratulations you are all set to do your first post. Good Job!
